Sting Newz web Desk: In yet another incident of caste discrimination, bags were allegedly distributed in Rajiv Gandhi Government PG College in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh which would help people identify Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students. These bags which were distributed among 250 of the 600 undergraduate and post-graduate SC/ST students, allegedly mentions that they have been distributed under the “SC/ST scheme”.
According to an Indian Express report, this incident came to forefront when the pictures of students with the bag started making rounds on social media. Calling this discrimination shameful, President of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee Arun Yadav took to Twitter to criticise RSS-backed Madhya Pradesh government and the treatment they were meting out to Dalits and tribals by using them as vote banks.
However, this isn’t the first time when SC/ST, Dalit students have been discriminated against. According to an article published in The Tribune last month, Lajpat Rai DAV College in Jagraon, Punjab installed a separate biometric machine to record the attendance of SC/Backward Class (OBC) students on the grounds that this would help in smooth disbursement of scholarships for these students.
While the students and Dalit organisations protested against the practice, a recent report states that the state government has not reviewed its decision on making biometric attendance compulsory for Dalit students availing scholarships.
Last year Indian Express reported that in schools of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, students are expected to wear different coloured bands on their wrists, foreheads, around their necks or under their shirts to be identified by the caste they belong to. These ‘caste markers’ were used to divide students in different teams on the basis of caste while playing a game.
